Kerry’s newest public library opened for business at Castleisland on Wednesday, 27th August and has been very well received and used by the public since then. The move from its previous location at the Carnegie Building [built in 1914], to the Area Services Centre at Station Road, Castleisland, allows it greater ability to greatly expand the range of services it can offer.
The new building, which is fully accessible, offers a range of services and products which allow greater access to library services. These include the standard adult and children’s book lending service, online and hardcopy newspapers, local studies, free internet access, a multi-media presentations facility, exhibition space, magnifiers for people with visual difficulties and other IT solutions.

Castleisland Library
The physical lay-out of the library will allow Castleisland Library to offer a greater range of these services, ensuring that the library will grow to become an even greater part of the community. Opening hours are 10.00am – 5.00pm, Tuesday – Saturday inclusive, including lunchtime opening and the library has a staff of 3. The library holds over 20,000 items and has 7 public internet points (including 1 specifically for children). Users may borrow up to 6 items at any given time for a 21 day loan period.
Rather than having the library as a stand-alone facility, the new
location is part of the Castleisland Area Services Centre. This allows
for shared services, and ensures the multi-function nature of the
building. It also allows the local community to better utilise the
building, carrying out other business there, as well as visiting the
library. The library was funded by the DoEHLG and cost €2.25m. The
builders were Galvin Developments Ltd., Killarney.
